Pansteel Makes a New Breakthrough in Vanadium Extraction with Large BOF
2024-01-03
Recently, a new vanadium extraction technology jointly developed by PISI and Xichang Steel&Vanadium has reduced the vanadium content in semi blown steel by 30%. The predominant process route for the development of vanadium resources in the Pan-Xi region is " smelting of vanadium containing molten iron with the blast furnace – oxidation of vanadium from molten iron with the BOF – preparation of vanadium products from vanadium slag ". Due to limitation on steel production, higher oxidation of vanadium from hot metal means higher vanadium recovery, which determines the production of vanadium products. The vanadium content in the semi-blown steel produced by the 200t-BOF at Xichang Steel&Vanadium remains at a high level, resulting in a significant loss of vanadium resources. To address this issue, PISI worked closely with Xichang Steel&Vanadium to carry out extensive research on the mechanism, equipment, and process of vanadium recovery. However, the vanadium yield has not been significantly improved. In 2023, based on a systematic summary of previous work, the joint research team focused on improving the dynamic conditions of the BOF for vanadium extraction. Through the development of original process technology, the kinetic energy of melting bath mixing was effectively improved, the kinetic conditions of vanadium oxidation were enhanced, and the efficient oxidation of vanadium from molten iron in a 200t BOF was realized for the first time in China. Under the premise of not increasing the production of molten iron, the new technology is expected to generate an annual efficiency of tens of millions of CNY, which will make new contributions to building the "third pole" of the Ansteel Group.
